Driving Anxiety: Teaching Someone to Drive

Driving anxiety typically arises when you’re the one doing the driving, but there are other reasons discomfort related to driving can develop.

Some people feel comfortable driving for the most part, but they feel extremely stressed when teaching another person how to drive. The worry is usually that the driver-in-training is overly reckless or unskilled and, therefore, more likely to have an accident.

Driving teachers with high anxiety may yell, grip the driver’s arm, or even strike the driver when they become overwrought. Needless to say, this kind of instruction is not healthy for the teacher or for the student. It’s likely it will also lead to anxiety in the new driver.

If teaching someone else how to drive is too stressful for you, it may be best to hire a professional driving tutor. Another option is to ask a responsible, experienced, and calm family member or friend to be the teacher.
