Having driving fear does not necessarily mean someone is afraid of driving in general. For some driving phobics, there are very specific situations which trigger anxiety and panic on the road. Driving over bridges, driving on highways, driving at night, and even driving on unfamiliar roads are some situations that breed high anxiety in people with driving phobia.
For one woman who began driving well into adulthood, a bad auto accident cut short her new sense of freedom. Long after the collision, the writer found that she was suddenly and deeply frightened when driving on the highway. She hoped it was simply an isolated incident, but all too soon she realized her fear was very real. Her new phobia resulted in avoidant, safety behaviors and a disruption in her lifestyle.
