Treating Driving Fear with Exposure Therapy

Driving phobia is an unreasonably strong fear of driving. It can be generalized to driving in any situation or restricted to driving in certain conditions.

Many people who have driving phobia think they have to suffer with their fear for their entire life. They may never try to get a license and rely on others for transportation  whenever they need to go somewhere.

It’s important to realize that driving phobia (and a number of other phobias) are usually quite treatable. One of the most effective treatments for phobias is called “exposure therapy.” Exposure therapy is essentially a direct confrontation of the feared object or situation. The therapist is present to help the affected person deal with the challenge of facing his or her anxiety.
